Post subject:  STASH code 2 and ppregrig

Hi,

I'm using the GrADS to visualize the PRECIS output, but first I need to fallowing steps:

1) Remove the rim: pprr -r 8 file.pp
2) Regrid output from 1) to regular lat lon: ppregrid -d 0.5,0.5 file.rr8.pp
3) Convert to grads-ready NetCDF

however, when I try to apply the step 2), the fallowing message apper:

ERROR: Can not regrid vector components to a target grid with a
ERROR: different coordinate pole
Failed in Fortran

I Would like to know why ppregrid doesn't work in STASH codes 2 and 3?

I appreciate any help.

Hi Claudia,
Stash code which are vectors (like stash 2 which is U vector component of wind and stash 3 which is V vector component wind) have to be dealt with differently than other variables. I believe there is a way to accomplish what you want to do, but I'm not sure. I'll ask Simon T to help.

Hi Claudia,

I am afraid that I am not aware of an easy way to do this in PRECIS itself.

The best option that I can think of is to install Iris http://scitools.org.uk/iris/docs/latest/whatsnew/1.9.html

Which includes this function:
http://scitools.org.uk/iris/docs/latest/iris/iris/analysis/cartography.html?highlight=rotate#iris.analysis.cartography.rotate_winds.

In fact you may find that a lot of the analysis you plan to do with grads, can also be done with Iris.

Note that currently Iris can not read the little endian PP files that PRECIS produces. Before reeding in to Iris you will need to type
Code:
bigend -32   [PRECIS_file.pp] [Iris_readable.pp]

There are plans to change this.

All the best,
Simon
