If you have a fresh installation of Linux, the first thing you'll need to do is install Public Domain Korn Shell -- pdksh.

If you have Ubuntu or Debian or Mint linux, use apt-get

Code:
sudo apt-get remove ksh
sudo apt-get install pdksh

Fedora, Red Hat,
Code:
sudo yum remove ksh
sudo yum install pdksh

OpenSUSE
Code:
sudo zypper remove ksh
sudo zypper install pdksh

The ksh and pdksh packages are different. It might be that ksh is not be automatically installed with your version of Linux, but if it is installed then the remove commands delete it. The next command installs pdksh.

Now download the PRECIS tarball.

It might go to the Downloads folder (e.g. $HOME/Download). If you have the choice, download it to $HOME.

If nexcessary, move the downloaded file to $HOME.
If it went to $HOME/Downloads, move it like this:
Code:
cd $HOME
mv $HOME/Download/Precis*  .

Now untar the file (replace Precis_vn2.0.0.tgz below with the appropriate file name)
Code:
tar xvzf Precis_vn2.0.0.tgz

that will create a folder $HOME/Precis_vn2.0.0/

Now copy the install files:

Code:
cp -v $HOME/Precis_vn2.0.0/install*  .

Now run the installer

Code:
./install_precis $HOME/Precis_vn2.0.0

From here I'll refer you the technical manual, starting on page 21.

http://www.precisrcm.com/tech_man.pdf

The main ones to get right are the input directories ($ANCIL_MASTER -- about 50GB, $DUMPSDIR -- about 10GB -- $PP4LBCDIR -- up to 1TB) and the output directory $ARCHIVEDIR (up to 1TB)

When the install_precis finishes, make sure you source setvars:

Code:
. $HOME/setvars

Assuming you chose yes to installing the sample data, when you type

Code:
precis

you should see the user interface and be able to run a test experiment if the at daemon is installed and running.
