After installing the MET boundary data I am unable to run any completed experiements. In the first minute of starting any experiment the STATUS shows "ERROR: Failed to update ancillary files". This problem was not present when I ran the test experiments that came with the PRECIS DVD. The .leave file is attached.

Your .leave file contains the following message:

The model can not run since the file qrdata.igbp is missing from the $ANCIL_MASTER directory. This file should have been included on the hard drive sent containing boundary data (sorry if it wasn't) and I assume you had a version of it at some point since you have run test runs. In any case the file can be downloaded from http://www.precisrcm.com/ancil/master/ along with other ancillary files.

Downloading http://www.precisrcm.com/ancil/master/qrdata.igbp.gz to $ANCIL_MASTER and decompressing (i.e. gunzip $ANCIL_MASTER/qrdata.igbp ) should hopefully do the trick. Let me know how you get on.

All the best,
Simon

Hi,

We have finally got Precis to run on OpenSUSE 12.3 (although the experiment monitoring window is still not working). Both the benchmark experiment and a new experiment that I set up for South America run well using the ERA15 boundary data (supplied for the benchmark exp). However, I cannot get the South America experiment to run with the ERA interim data supplied by the metoffice. I get the following error message:

"ERROR: Failed to update ancillary files".

Initially, I think this may have related to timings as .leave file states:
"ERROR: Current model time (19881201000000) proceeds latest possible ancillary time ()"
with
"ERROR updating ancillary files (exit code 255)"
This may have been due to not having unzipped all the ancillary files.

Now (after having unzipped all the ancillary files in $HOME/ancil/master/) I am getting other errors, still with the "ERROR: Failed to update ancillary files" message.

The .leave file now states:
Code:
ERROR: Failed in system /home/precis/um/vn4.5/scripts/ancil/vn4.4/scripts/ancil_top_level -l /home/precis/precis_expt/ancil/nclaa/qrparm.orog.mask -n /home/precis/precis_expt/ancil/nclaa/gridnamelist_vn4.4 -o /home/precis/precis_expt/ancil/nclaa -s .make_ancil_orog.script -t .make_ancil_orog.namelist -v -z orog -b "-i /home/precis/precis_expt/nclaa/nclaa_ancil_master/qrorog.navy10.y84n -j /home/precis/precis_expt/nclaa/nclaa_ancil_master/qrparm.ashhr -k /home/precis/precis_expt/ancil/nclaa/qrparm.orog     -m" >>/home/precis/precis_expt/ancil/nclaa/.nclaa.orog.out 2>&1

In fact, it may be this type of error which is causing the OpenSUSE 12.3 operating system to be rather unstable.
Whenever I run precis and get an error, the system beeps a lot and precis stops working. If I close the GUI, I cannot restart it and I get the following kernel messages (we checked and all hardware is fully functional so this must be a kernel bug?):

Code:
~> precis
Error in startup script: child killed: kill signal

"exec convert $env(SAVEDIR)/regions/$region/new.ppm -scale 265x265  $env(SAVEDIR)/regions/$region/new_resize.gif"

Is there anything you can suggest to help please?

Isabella,
If you can enable access to your system via ssh or Team Viewer, I will have a look. Are you running on a PC or on a cluster system?

The monitor window not working is a non-issue. You can check the progress of the model (once it is working) by typing

runtime [runid]

e.g.
Code:
runtime nclaa

The precis startup error may be happening if you don't have ImageMagick installed.

If team viewer or ssh are not possible, we'll try to solve it another way. It would help if I could see the full *.leave file. If you
can gzip it and then attach it to your reply to this post, that would be good.

Thanks
David

Hi David,

thank you for your help and suggestions. My computer officer found a post somewhere that suggested adding a command line parameter for the kernel load might fix things... and it seems to have done - and my simulations are now running! Hopefully everything will run smoothly now.

Thanks again,
Isabella
